COLOSTOMY FOR ANORECTAL MALFORMATIONS
This is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) between the abdominal wall and the colon. It also involves creating a second opening (mucus fistula) that allows the medical team to perform further necessary tests prior to a PSARP operation.
The colostomy is created in order to:
- Create a safe route for the excretion of gas and stool from the body into a collecting bag, until after a PSARP operation has been completed.
- In order to protect the neo-anus created during the PSARP procedure from contamination by stool and subsequent infection. Following a colostomy formation, the nursing staff and other medical professionals educate and train the parents on caring for the stoma.
The colostomy is a temporary measure and is reversed after the satisfactory recovery from other necessary surgical procedures.
